Is Houston Becoming One of the Worst Places to Drive in the Country?

Houston is one of the most populated cities in the United States. In addition, 90 percent of Houston residents own vehicles. Given these factors, it should come as no surprise that Houston is also ranked as one of the worst cities for traffic congestion. According to INRIX, a traffic data company based in Washington, Houston ranks among the top 25 U.S. cities for traffic congestion. INRIX based its data on the duration, frequency and length of traffic jams.

The Texas Department of Transportation (also called TxDOT) released its own statistics highlighting the scope of the problem. TxDOT statistics show that six of the most congested roadways in the state are in Harris County.

Traffic congestion can also contribute to an increased risk of car accidents. This is something to keep in mind, especially as the holidays approach. Thanksgiving weekend, for example, is one of the deadliest times of the year to drive. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show an increase in car accidents during the Thanksgiving Weekend. Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and other holidays also see a spike in motorists on the road, and therefore, collisions. Drinking and driving are also far more common during holidays, such as Halloween.

What to Do After a Car Accident

If you are harmed during a car accident, you should consider contacting an attorney. Shortly after your accident, there is a good chance an adjuster from the other driver’s insurance company will contact you to discuss the wreck.

While it is ok to give identifying information to the adjuster, you should avoid saying anything else. Whatever you say to that person could be used against you to lower the value of an eventual settlement. Instead of speaking to the adjuster on your own, you should contact a law firm that has a long history of handling car accident cases. An attorney could negotiate with the insurance companies on your behalf to help you secure a more favorable settlement. In addition, your attorney could help you compile any evidence that could help your case.
